Leo in Depth
Leo is ruled by the Sun, the centre of our solar system, and its symbol is the lion, a regal and dangerous animal who is best not thwarted. Proud and noble, passionate and determined, Leos always tend to be a bit larger than life. They love to be noticed, adored and admired, and will do just about anything to gain your attention. They usually do this by displaying their generosity, affection, and good humour, but will show a less agreeable side to themselves when the desired effect is not forthcoming.
Leo's energy is loyal, dedicated, and self-assured, and their passionate idealism makes them great leaders and organizers. They are quite theatrical and love glitz and glamour, and their love of drama means they are often drawn to work in the theatre.
They can also be self-indulgent, obstinate and sulky if they don't get their own way. Leos who feel unappreciated or unloved can become depressed, self-pitying, or self-destructive.
Most Leos laugh and smile a great deal, and they are warm and affectionate. Leos who are well-respected and admired have hearts of gold which bestow an abundance of love. When Leos commit themselves to something or someone, they do so for life or as long as possible. However, relationships built on love and affection can sometimes turn sour and Leos are unable to escape from them because of their unswerving loyalty as well as their fear of being disliked or rejected for being seen to let people down.
Leo is often associated with the Greek myth of the Nemean Lion, which was killed by Hercules during one of his 12 labours, and subsequently put into the sky. It is also associated with the mythological figure of Penelope, from the Greek myth of the Trojan War, along with the goddess Sunna, the Greco-Roman god Apollo and the gods Helios (Sol), Ra and Huitzilopochtli.
At Play
Leo is the lazy lion who loves to sleep and stay inactive during leisure hours, but when action is called for, they are off like a bullet from a gun. They are unhappy following the crowd and like to lead.
Activities which need an investment of both time and patience are also highly suited to the Leo character, such as yoga, tai-chi, painting and music. They enjoy the world of theatre and often become involved with amateur dramatic groups.
As they are physically strong, they are capable of great success in sports such as marathon running, athletics, football and wrestling. They have a great affinity with horses and enjoy equestrian pursuits such as riding, polo and horseracing. They are laid-back but highly competitive and poor losers.
At Work
Leos do not like to rush anything, and they seem relaxed, possibly a little lazy - just like a sleeping lion. In truth, they are always alert and ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. Leos work harder than most when motivated and happy and are reliable and loyal, always there when needed.
Leos need to occupy positions of authority and respect, which they earn by commitment and hard work, and it is essential that they choose a profession where they can be happy. They are also drawn to positions which allow them creativity. They will not put up with being undermined or ordered about, and will either rebel openly or develop a slow burning resentment that will eventually explode.
They might take up work as an architect, company executive, fashion designer, film director, actor or entertainer.
Health
Leos have a strong constitution, but too much abuse, however, may weaken the vulnerable Leo heart, making this sign more prone to heart problems than any other. The natural pride of Leos is obvious from an early age when they instinctively assume an upright posture when sitting and walking. Leos who slouch and hold themselves badly will find themselves paying for it later in life. Leos put on weight easily, and too much fat and sugar can be damaging to their hearts.
