Major Planetary Configurations

The four planetary configurations shown here are combinations of the major aspects, representing a powerful energy force that can be detrimental or beneficial according to the aspects concerned.

The Grand Cross

This is an extremely powerful, rare configuration of four planets all separated from each other by square aspects (90 degrees apart). A grand cross can also be viewed as two oppositions (180 degrees apart) separated from each other by a square.

It forms the shape of a cross and those who possess it have a cross, or many crosses, to bear within their lifetime. Because all the six aspects in a grand cross are considered difficult, the grand cross is seen as a source of extreme tension whereby various aspects of the personality (represented by the planets) are working at cross purposes that serve to cancel each other out. This pulls the native in many directions, ultimately leading to indecisiveness and an inability to produce concrete achievements. It is said to take extraordinary effort to overcome the conflicts in a grand cross. Although the subjects try hard to structure their lives positively, they usually fail as the strength of the configuration overwhelms them. They tend to repeat the same mistakes again and again, and may become highly stressed, aggressive, fixated or depressed, depending on the planets, signs, and houses involved. However, they can accomplish anything if they learn to exploit the immense powers of this configuration.

If the configuration is made up of planets in cardinal (moveable) signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn), the subject often tends to be critical, impersonal, and likes to dominate in many ways. The cardinal cross produces a lot of impatience in their nature and they often make hasty decisions that they may regret later. They have a lot of energies and are constantly looking for ways to spend it.

If the configuration is made up of planets in fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius), the subject often seeks structure in their lives and it can be hard for them to deal with abstractions, values and ideals. This aspect implies endurance and resistance in the face of adversity, but it can produce inflexibility, which inhibits progress. The subject may need to be more flexible in their dealings with people; less determined and rigid.

If the configuration is made up of planets in mutable (bicorporeal) signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pieces), the subject tends to become immersed in criticism, ideals, and values. The easiest course for them may be to try to avoid or ignore difficulties, but such action does nothing to resolve them. They should be aware of the importance for them to show their individuality and avoid simply following the leader and trend of the times.

The Grand Trine

A grand trine occurs when you have three planets in the horoscope that are all separated by a span of 120 degrees. With the placement of the planets, the grand trine visually looks like a large triangle across the horoscope of the recipient. This configuration is more beneficial in its effects, but less common than the T-square. It can give self-confidence, optimism, creativity and good fortune - the reward of well used talents from past lifetimes. The downside of this configuration is that because there is no challenge to accomplish good results, apathy or acceptance can take place, weakening the otherwise plentiful effects of this configuration. Trines that are poorly managed are believed to lead to the subject adopting a false sense of security, which results in passivity and a lack of motivation to act upon those opportunities that are presented to them during the course of their life. These individuals often grow up expecting special treatment, seldom feeling driven to work for that which they desire. As a result of this, they may fail to develop the social and intellectual skills necessary to get on in life.

The T-Square

The T-Square is an astrological configuration in which two planets form an opposition, while a third planet forms a square to both planets in the opposition. When looking at the configuration in the chart, it resembles a T. This is the most common of the four configurations, and is seen in approximately 40% of all horoscopes.

Because both aspects are stressful, the T-square (also known as a cosmic cross) can be highly complex in its expression according to the signs and houses it occupies. This can cause tension and stress, lack of confidence, hostility and disharmony. It tends to put pressure on the subject, and this tension usually propels the subject to take actions to remedy the stressful situation that has presented itself.

A T square is similar to a Grand Cross but it is much weaker because it involves only three planets. Due to lesser energy emitted by the T square, individuals with this planetary configuration feel that there is something lacking and therefore have to supply what they think is lacking for better integration of their personality. The subject must work hard to turn into this configuration into something harmonious and positive, but it is possible.

The Yod

This configuration (also known as the Finger of God or Finger of Fate) is said to form whenever one planet forms quincunxes (150° aspects) to two other planets that are separated by a sextile (60° aspect) to form the shape of a pointing finger.

The two planets in the sextile, being in complementary elements (earth and water or fire and air) work very well together, but the sign to which both of them are quincunx is of a dissimilar element to the other two and possesses characteristics that tend to be extremely incompatible with those of the other two signs. This third planet pulls in an opposite direction from the other two.

However, unlike the grand cross, the conflict is much less apparent because the two planets in sextile cannot understand the third. The subject often cannot see the conflicts involved and thus is not likely to be able to deal with them as productively as with a grand cross.

The benefits of the sextile aspect are merged into the energies of the two quincunxes with the focal planet placed at the point. This planet is particularly significant because it represents the culmination of talent which is attainable when the hardships of the quincunxes have been channeled into positive creativity. This configuration is usually hard to handle during childhood but can develop into a resourceful influence in later years. It is often found in the charts of highly developed or spiritual individuals.
